Talking to my son on the phone while he's away and listening to him laugh about something. It's the most innocent, pure and sweetest sound and fills my day with inexplicable happiness and peace. His laughter is a reminder that he's still a child with so many years of being "grown" ahead of him. But in that moment when I hear him laugh he's still my little boy and it's alright...

old pic of me and yums
i think about my children all the time...my prayers are constantly for them...i pray for yahoshua who is with his father for the summer and in a different spiritual environment...i ask for his safety and emotional security...i pray for the strength that he needs when he's scared and overwhelmed..i pray that he knows just how much he's loved and cared for...i pray that God makes him a better person than I could ever be..i pray he realizes his purpose..i pray for him to be centered...i pray for his health and emotional and spiritual maturity...i pray that my indiscretions in life don't determine his destiny...i pray that my character flaws don't genetically predispose him to the weaknesses i face...i pray for my children but i pray so deeply for my first born son who means the world to me and is my heart...i give him fully to God trusting that my prayers are already answered....

thank you for hearing my prayers.....

i love you yahoshua.

Yums, his best friend and my nephew

It is clear that my 9 year old is growing into his manhood..his maschismo..he is getting his swagger. This is evidenced by his love of skinny jeans and the way he transforms into this adolescent with confidence when he puts them on. It's the most interesting thing to see. Just the other day, it seems, he was holding my hand and wanting to sit on my lap and sleep in my bed (still wants that). But now he is practicing all the latest dance steps..the jerk, the moon walk. He is rapping along with the profanity edited Jay Z album. In other words, he is cool. Imagine that...my Yums, Cool....

Egypt
when i think of my little brown boy
i automatically grin.
this little male child
whose hands are shaped like mine
and bone structure resembles me.
who asks why
and still spontaneously gives me
great hugs and kisses.
this little brown boy
whose eyes well with tears
at times.
whose laugh makes me melt
all the time.
whose smile makes me day
every time.
my yums....
my son.....
my love....

I gave birth to Yums at home. It was an incredible experience. I was surrounded by a beautiful environment and was able to participate freely in my birthing process. As wonderful as it was there was pain....a lot of it! I used herbal tea as my pain killers. The pain was the pull my hair out, use a profound amount of profanity and call upon God to deliver me type of pain. At one point I felt as if I were being torn apart; shortly after that I felt this great expulsion and then blissful relief. Right after that moment I said...ok, I can do this again! I gave birth to my son through a lot of pain and discomfort but it was completely worth it. I thought about this with our life experiences. There are times that we are in the midst of giving birth to something great....confidence, a new beginning, security...but it's too painful. We are unable to get through the birthing process because it doesn't feel good. We don't want to deal with the discomfort, the anxiety, the gut wrenching hurt in order to make it to the other side. And the amazing thing is that what we will birth will be beyond description. It will be inexplicably beautiful. We will understand that we had to experience the debilitating pain to bring forth new life. We are able to do it naturally. We don't need prescription drugs or alcohol or some other distraction to make it through the process. We need to remember that no matter how much it hurts in the moment, when the pain is over there will be a new life.

It's a blessing from the Creator to be so close to my 36th birthday. 6 more days of celebrating life at 35. I feel good. I have this delicious little boy that I call Yums who will love me forever and who makes me laugh. I have this wonderful big man that remembers I love sundresses and Starbucks and will go get me a slice of key lime pie in the middle of the night..just cause I want it. I have these great sisters who keep me balanced as the middle child. On one end my older sister who is beautiful beyond understanding and so full of life it's hard to describe. On the other end my little sister with the brown beauties for children who is like a real life superhero to me. I have girlfriends that make me laugh; make me cry; allow me to be me; help me to be the woman I crave to be. I have parents that love me unconditionally..despite. I have a home to come to at night. I have a job. I have food to sustain me. I have legs to get me where I'm going. My mind is at rest. I am being loved every day even when I don't know it. I am so grateful to be at this point in my life.

My son left for the summer yesterday. I won't see him for another 2 months. Although he has been leaving each and every summer for five years I still get sad when I say good bye. I had an interesting experience before he left yesterday; the first in five years. Yums was sitting by the gate with my love and I walked about 30 feet away to buy a pack of gum for him. I couldn't have been gone for more than 30 seconds but when I turned to walk back to them Yums was gone. I looked in amazement at my love and asked him.....where is Yums? To which he replied, they had to take him on the plane. Never in this leaving process had I not been allowed to kiss my son's cheeks and tell him I love him before he walked onto the plane. I broke down. Right in the airport I started crying and it was almost like I couldn't help myself. The manager noticing my distress allowed me to go on the PACKED and WAITING TO LEAVE plane and go to the very last seat where my son was sitting to give him a kiss and hug goodbye. I appreciated that more than she knew and was able to leave some of my energy with my son and take some of his.

My son is 9 years old. His name is Yahoshua but I call him Yums or Yummy. He's a remarkable little boy, cute, sweet, kind and loving. Yesterday was picture day at school and I completely forgot!!!!! I remembered on Monday morning when I gave him the form to take to school but by Tuesday morning it had slipped my mind. So he went to school in his usual gear, a polo and cargo pants (usually not ironed) and badly in need of a haircut. He said that everyone else was dressed really nicely. I apologized profusely for forgetting and he said, "it's ok mommy I know you're busy." *Sigh* I can't ever be too busy for Yummy....
